‘Base retaken’

NZPA-AFP Bangkok Kampuchean nationalists had retaken control of Lake Ampil after thwarting an attack by Vietnamese forces, Thai military sources said yesterday.

Guerrillas of the Khmer People’s National Liberation Front had taken back all their positions around Lake Ampil at Kampuchea’s north-west border with Thailand late on Sunday, they said. The lake is about 4km inside Kampuchea and is the advanced post of the Ampil base, which Vietnamese forces have been besieging since April 14. The sources said that Hanoi’s troops had had to lift the siege at the base because they lacked munitions and supplies after confronting stronger resistance than expected from the Kampuchean guerrillas.
