Seychelles official to visit N.Z.
PA Wellington Dr Maxime Ferrari, the Minister of Planning and External Relations for the tiny Indian Ocean island republic of Seychelles, will stop in Wellington this week on his way to Fiji. He will meet the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, on Friday. Labour’s spokesman on overseas aid and development, Ms Helen Clark, will also meet him.
New Zealand has few dealings with the Seychelles, although the frigate H.M.N.Z.S. Waikato was in port at the island’s capital, Victoria, when an army mutiny broke out in 1982. The year before, a mercenary, Colonel Michael “Mad Mike” Hoare. failed in an attempt to overthrow the Seychelles Government headed by President Albert Rene, and was later jailed.
