Quail Island, the largest island in Lyttelton Harbour, is a secondary cone built up in the volcanic crater that formed the harbour. In the 1880s the island was used as a quarantine station. In the 1900s it was used to accommodate does and ponies for the Antarctic expeditions of Sir Ernest Shackleton and Captain Robert Falcon Scott. From 1918 to 1925 it was declared a leper station. The island was named after the quails that once inhabited it.
