Water options for Governor’s Bay outlined

The domestic water supply for Governor’s Bay should be taken from the Lyttelton Borough Council at an estimated cost of $345,000, a study report has recommended. The preliminary report, prepared by Royds Sutherland McLeay, Ltd, for the Mount Herbert County Council, outlined investigations and options for the supply of domestic water to Governor’s Bay. At present, the water came from rain water and several small springs, the report said. No reliable source of water suitable for a public supply was available in the immediate area of Governor’s Bay. The options considered to have the lowest capital cost were a supply from the Lyttelton Borough Council, estimated at $310,000, and a suply from the Hc-athcote County Council, estimated at $302,000. The report recommended that the supply be taken from the Lyttelton borough via a road pipeline. A supply from the borough via a submarine pipeline across the harbour was estimated to cost $470,000. The Heathcote supply

would involve pumping 4.5 km from Victoria Park over Dyers Pass. An additional option of pumping water from the Motukarara area, where water was plentiful, was estimated to cost $445,000. Although the Lyttelton option was slightly more costly than the Heathcote supply, the Lyttelton pumping costs were significantly less. This would be reflected in water charges, the report said. Estimates did not include the cost of the reservoir which would be built above the residential zone, at an estimated cost of $35,000. The report suggested that the council approach the Lyttelton Borough Council to discuss the option. It also recommended a preliminary pipeline survey to determine the most practicable route. The council plans to hold a public meeting to discuss both water and sewerage schemes with Governor’s Bay residents when more detailed information is available. The schemes will be discussed at the council’s monthly meeting on April 30.
