Compression clips ii hydraulic cylinders
The innovative inclusion of compression clips in the design of the new series of double-acting hydraulic cylinders has earned an Industrial Design Award for Victor Hydraulics, a division of Campion and Irving, Ltd. The patented design involves two spring steel compression clips located in machined grooves in the piston rod which hold the piston on the rod. By this method of attachment, the assembly gains more than twice the strength of conventional designs which rely on ma-chined-down diameters for thread and nut retention. The conventional pistons had to be torqued on to the piston rod to minimise the risk of becoming unscrewed while in use. This action pre-tensioned the rod, reducing its load capacity. Also, the conventional piston was often located on a machined surface that was not true to the outside diameter of the rod, causing eccentricity of the assembly, side loading and
accelerated bearing and seal wear. These problems are eliminated by the self-centr-ing assembly that simply locates the piston directly on to the chromed outer diameter of the piston rod. Hydraulic rams play a vital role in transferring power into mechanical mus-
cle, and the compression clip series has many advantages over existing types. The new design eliminates built-in side loading, has a working pressure of up to 351 kg/sq. cm, is stronger because the piston rod is not threaded, and will accept much higher shock pressures.
