Detective found guilty resigns
PA Auckland An Auckland policeman found guilty of assaulting and obstructing a traffic officer has resigned. Mark Van Leeuwarden, aged 25, a detective, of Northcote, offered his resignation after a District Court judge in Auckland found the two charges proved. Auckland’s police chief, Assistant Commissioner K. G. Sykes, confirmed yesterday that the resignation had been accepted and that Van Leeuwarden was no longer a member of the police. Van Leeuwarden had been suspended after the incident on February 22. A decision on his future was to have been made in the nextrfew weeks by the Commissioner of Police, Mr K. O. Thompson, after a review of the facts, Mr Sykes said.
