‘Press’ chess competition
“The Press” will again sponsor a chess teams’ competition for secondary and intermediate schools in the second term. The tournament, now in its fourteenth year, has had an increase of $l5O in prize money, and $4OO will be shared by the successful schools. In 1982, a record 35 teams competed in the tournament and that number was matched last year. The tournament will be divided into four grades and the prize money will be allocated as follows: A grade, $7O, $5O, $4O, $3O. B grade, $45, $3O. C grade, $45, $3O. Girls’ grade, $35, $25. Entries for the tournament may be sent to “The Press” Schools’ Chess Competition, P.O. Box 1005, Christchurch. Entries will close on May 22 and the tournament will begin the next week. Secondary schools entering one team are expected to compete in the A grade,
although a school which has an inexperienced team will be accepted in the B grade. Schools entering two teams may have both in the A grade if they consider their teams have sufficient strength, but they are expected to have one in each grade. The C grade is restricted to intermediate schools. If there are insufficient entries for the girls’ grade, a girls’ team may play in either the A or B grade. Teams will consist of six players and schools are asked to supply a ranking list no later than the start of the second round. Each team is asked to name a liaison officer and to supply a school and private telephone number. All schools will receive a draw for the preliminary rounds, score sheets, result slips, a copy of the rules (which have been revised this year) and a list of liaison officers and contact numbers.
