Talented golfer transfers

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

Job promotion and the resultant transfer of Paul Atkinson to Palmerston

North will be further blow to the Russley Golf Club, which has been hard-hit by the loss of several key players this season. Atkinson will become a checking officer at the National Bank in Palmerston North on May 7, but he is looking forward to continuing his golf career and intends making a determined bid for the Manawatu-Wanganui Freyberg team. Atkinson, aged 25, has already set the wheels in motion to become a member of the Manawatu Golf Club and is keen to play the challenging Hokowhitu course. Although a younger brojKer, Michael, a national unde?-26 representative, has

reached higher honours, Paul has been a very successful golfer. He played for Canterbury for four successive years and lost only three of his 10 games. His highest position was at No. 4 against Mid-South Canterbury and he was twice reserve for the Canterbury, eight-man team for the South Island teams’ tournament and reserve once for the Southland invitational event. For all his ability, Atkinson did hot have such an impressive record at interclub level, winning only 16 of 43 matches in the Woodward Cup competition. However, he played high in the order over five seasons and was often opposed by leading Canterbury representatives. ' After a period of 18

months in which he had little time to devote to golf, Atkinson has come back strongly recently. He was delighted with his form at the New Zealand championships last month, losing onedown in the semi-finals of the R. and A. Rosebowl to. the eventual Frank Borren, of Hutt Valley. “I was three-under after five holes and only one-up.” A week ago, Atkinson teamed with Bryan Hazeldine to finish third in the Canterbury men’s foursomes. They had led after 18 holes. Short in stature, Atkinson is not the most powerful of strikers, but he is an accurate hitter with a skilled short game. He should make his presence felt in his new club and province.
