Badminton Top four teams highly competitive

Four points cover the top four teams after two rounds of the A grade inter-club badminton competition, However, one of those four, Hagley I, owes its lofty position partly to a win by default on Saturday. The Hagley team, as well as the two South Brighton II women, turned up to find that there were no South Brighton men, and Hagley was awarded the 14 points for a clean sweep. South Brighton’s No. 1 team leads the table after its comfortable 7-1 win over KnoxCanterbury. Its only loss came in the second men’s singles

match, when Douglas Olliver came unstuck against the experienced Eion Kirkland. The veteran Kirkland won the opSgame narrowly, and the in setting. Lynda Kitchingham fought determinedly against the formidable Colleen Hellyer, before losing the opening game in setting, and Miss Hellyer was untroubled in the second. Railway I is one point behind South Brighton I after its 6-2 win over Railway IL Mark Waldin, filling in for Graham Sercombe at No. 1, led the way with his singles win over Graham Rogers, but it was
