Fans’ pitched battle
NZPA Highbury Everton and Southampton soccer fans fought on the pitch after Saturday’s Highbury F.A. Cup semi-final. Mounted police moved in to clear the fans, who clashed for more than five minutes. There were a number of arrests. Everton had snatched a 10 victory three minutes from the end of extra time. Supporters in the 46,000 crowd went on to the pitch to celebrate, but were quickly shepherded back. At&e final whistle, they
returned to continue their celebrations, but when they taunted the Southampton fans at the other end some swarmed on to the pitch and the fighting began. Everton’s manager, Howard Kendall, said: Y ‘The first invasion was just a celebration with nothing harmful meant. “I didn’t see the later incidents, but if they were as bad as I am told, I am sorry, because Merseyside fans have won a great reputation for sportsmanship recently.” \
