Review of tariffs ‘urgent’

PA Wellington The Labour Party’s spokesman on trade and industry, Mr David Caygill, last everting called for tariff preferences to “developing countries” to be urgently reviewed. Mr Caygill asked why there was a lower rate of duty on countries such as Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Israel than on the so-called developed countries. “But why?” he asked in a speech to the Tanners’ Association’s annual conference in Rotorua. “Singapore has a gross national produce per capita almost exactly equal to ours. “Why should we give her products any preference over those from say Canada or Japan? “In my view these preferences must be reviewed as a matter of urgency,” he saiad.
