The West German Army’s tank battalions are being equipped with one of the world’s most modern tanks. The Leopard 2 has replaced the old American-built M48 and will eventually replace the Leopard 1, the first post-war tank to be built in Germany. The Leopard 2 weighs 55 tonnes and its main armament is a 120mm smooth-bore gun.
