Technology
Sir,—Technology is merely a tool and there is, as Mr D. Quigley points out, nothing new about it. Its development and sophistication are a result of persons and policies rather than people. People are not consulted. There are no referendums, such as “do you want Think Big?” or or technological preferences the result of a democratic decision such as “do you see road transport as being preferable to railways?” Such decisions have always been made on the basis of a particular political party’s policy, never on the effects such technology has upon the majority of the people. There is nothing wrong with the tool per se, only with that which controls the use of the tool. Technology may be progressive, politics as represented by Mr Quigley are retrogressive. — Yours, etc.,
L. J. ROBINSON. April 9, 1984.
