Fears for man’s safety
PA Timaru The police now fear for the safety of Horst Bergmann, the German tourist of whom there have been no confirmed sightings for a month since he set out to climb in the Mount Cook National Park. Superintendent J. W. Wooders, of the Timaru police, said yesterday that publicity sought by the police through the news media in an effort to trace him had brought no response. “As each day passes, our fears for his safety rise,” he said. While there have been reports of Mr Bergmann s having been seen in several parts of New Zealand over the last three weeks, there have been no confirmed sightings since he went climbing at Mount Cook on March 13. On March 14 he signed
the intentions book at the Gardiner Hut, about 1200 metres up the Hooker Valley side of Mount Cook. Mr Bergmann, who has been described as an ekperienced climber, was apparently alone in the park. A search was mounted in the area on March 23 by park staff after Mr Bergmann failed to sign out in
the intentions book, but there was no trace of him. The police would not renew the search at this stage, but would follow up reported sightings, Mr- Wooders said.
