M.P. against 90km/h limit

PA Wanganui The Wanganui member of Parliament, Mr Russell Marshall, has admitted that he regularly breaks the open-road speed limit but thinks it would be irresponsible to raise it from the present 80km/h. Mr Marshall, who is also a city councillor, told the Wanganui City' Council on Monday evening that he is among the big majority of motorists who exceed 80km/h. “I know what I’m doing, when I’m doing it — and by how much,” he said. “But it

would be irresponsible if we endorsed lifting the speed limit.” Mr Marshall said that there is a good deal of evidence that raising the limit would increase the likelihood of road deaths. His comments were made in a debate preceding the council’s 6-4 vote in support of the Ministry of Transport’s recommendations to the Parliamentary Select Committee on road safety. These propose a 90km/h limit for cars and motorcycles and an 80km/h limit for buses, trucks and cars with trailers.
