Warehouse renovated and upgraded

The Christchurch branch of Briscoes is the second in the South Island to be renovated and upgraded to meet the company’s objectives of providing better merchandising, says Mr Kevin Smith, the South Island manager of Briscoes. The first was Invercargill, which was completed before Christmas. The Briscoes warehouse at 195 Salisbury Street now has installed better lighting, coverings on the concrete floors and new stands for better presentation of stock. “Today, it is very important that we, as self-service wholesalers, keep our showrooms up to date and provide the best possible service to our Briscard holders,” Mr Smith said. “The Briscoes policy of

direct self-service wholesale prices means big savings the year round, with special supersavings every month. Compare prices if you like, but you won’t find better quality at better prices. “The Briscard provides special buying privileges to companies, retailers, organisations, clubs and trade, and gives them access to our self-service warehouses at special cash-and-carry prices. “We have 13 warehouses throughout New Zealand — eight in the North Island and five in the South Island — providing the largest non-food warehouse facility in the country,” he said. Mr Smith joined Briscoes in 1946, became the South Canterbury representative in 1952, and transferred to

Dunedin in 1962 as representative for Otago. He was appointed manager of the new branch in Oamaru in 1963, and later that year was appointed manager of the Timaru branch.

Mr Smith was transferred back to Dunedin as assistant manager in 1970, and on to Christchurch in 1979 as regional manager of Nelson, Christchurch and Timaru. He was appointed South Island manager in 1982.

Mr Smith is an active member of the St John Ambulance Brigade after joining as a cadet in Timaru in 1942. He has held various appointments throughout the South Island and is now the district commissioner of the Canterbury-West Coast district.
