Amateur wrestling won by Otago
By winning the last bout, Otago captured the I. B. Roberts Provincial Challenge Trophy off Canterbury in an amateur wrestling contest at Rangiora on Sunday. The outstanding wrestler was Brent Hollamby, of Otago, who showed the benefits of two years competition in the United States. Results (Canterbury names first) were:— Senior.—s7kg: B. Ellerm lost to B. Hollamby (superior points 0-12). Junior.—62kg: D. Mangnall beat P. Wolfenbuttle (points, 11-4). 60kg: S. Jones beat B. Brinsdon (points, 4-3).
14 to 16 years.—72kg: I. Dobson lost to A. Brinsdon (fall, round 1). 55kg: S. Kingi lost to P. Wills (fall, round 1). 48kg: P. Gread beat S. Montgomery (fall, round 1). 32kg: J. Ford lost to S. Dowling (superior points, 3-15). Thirty-two leading South Island wrestlers attended a training camp at Rangiora at the week-end, where the principal coaches were Steve Wylie (Otago), Kevan McLaughlan and Rex Anderson (both Canterbury). An exchange of ideas, techniques and training methods were discussed. A clinic for referees and pair masters was held in conjunction.
