Atom work wins award
PA Auckland An associate professor at the University of Auckland, Dr Warren Roper, has been given the Royal Society of Chemistry’s award for or-gano-metallic chemistry. Dr Roper, aged 49, is the first New Zealander to receive the British society’s award, which is usually given to British subjects. Dr Roper received the award for his work with compounds of metals and carbon atoms. The citation said that his distinguished work during the last 20 years had contributed much to the understanding of factors governing the stability of compounds of metals and carbon atoms. Some of the compounds are used in converting crude petroleum to other products, and Dr Roper has been invited to'lecture over the years to many of the leading American and European oil and chemical com.panies. But he said he did the research because it was intrinsically interesting.
