Rugby injuries start early
PA Wellington Four rugby players have been admitted to spinal units since the winter season started two weeks ago. In the latest accident a Foxton rugby player was flown to the Burwood spinal injuries unit in Christchurch on Sunday for treatment of injuries suffered in a match at Levin.
A specialist at the unit said yesterday it would be about three weeks before doctors could tell whether injuries to Clayton Stretch, aged 17, would result in permanent paralysis. Earlier in the season a
man, aged 23, was admitted to the unit after he was injured in a scrum collapse in Masterton.
At Otara’s spinal unit, two young men, aged 16 and 20, are being treated as tetraplegics after breaking their necks in Auckland games — one during a tackle, the other in a collapsing scrum. The chairman of the medical advisory committee to the Rugby Union, Dr Hugh Burry, said yesterday that rugby must be seen in context with other sports.
“We should realise that rugby is a less common cause of cervical spinal injuries than diving,” he said.
