Cheviot calf sale success

Steer and heifer calves sold strongly at the Cheviot calf sale yesterday continuing the run of successful calf sales in North Canterbury this season.

Prices over all were fully firm with those at Thursday’s Kaikoura sale. A feature of the two sales has been the keen demand for heifer calves and small to medium steers. Some of the top steers looked good buying when compared with the prices paid for smaller calves. Buyers yesterday came from a wide area, including Dunsandel, Ashburton, Waiau and Kaikoura as well as the Cheviot area. Some buyers who were deterred from buying calves at the Kaikoura sale because of the high prices, again went home empty handed yesterday. Several pens of big autumnborn steer calves sold from $370 to $390, and heifers of a similar age sold to $350. An attractive line of Murray Grey cross steer calves from D. R. Wright, Wenlock, sold to $372, and other good calves sold from $330 upwards. Many sales were in the $320 to $350 bracket, and only four pens of steers out of a total of almost 50 made less than $3OO. Most heifer calves made between $270 and $320 and only six pens out of 38 sold for under $250. The yarding totalled 1082, comprising 628 steers and 454 heifers. This was the only Cheviot calf sale for the season; the second Cheviot sale, which was scheduled for late April has been cancelled because of a reduction in calf numbers. Sales included:— Steers: D.
