Board commends Rakaia order

Everyone was “a winner" in the National Water Conservation Order on the Rakaia River, the North Canterbury Catchment Board heard yesterday. Commenting on the draft order, released on Thursday, the board’s chairman, Mr R. B. Johnson, said it was a soundly based solution and one which would be difficult to appeal against.

Mr 0. J. Osborne said the order set a precedent for any future decisions to be

made with soundly based information. He attributed the "success” of the order to the extensive preparation done by the board. Sacrifices by all interested parties were necessary, he said. “If all the parties were prepared to make some degree of sacrifice, there would be enough water for everybody,” he said. Most board members agreed that tbe order “treated everyone fairly.”
