Russians renew contract

The Lyttelton engineering firm, Sinclair Melbourne, Ltd, has renewed its yearly contract for maintenance of Russian fishing vessels using Lyttelton. The contract is estimated to be worth about $300,000, according to the firm’s managing director, Mr Terry Arthurs. The original contract was arranged in April. 1983, with the option of an additional year which has been accepted by the firm. About six Russian vessels are docked each year for maintenance and Sinclair Melbourne staff are involved with repairs to about 10 vessels a year which do not need docking. The vessels spend about five days on average in the port’s dry dock for general voyage repairs and the rebuilding of worn gear. Mr Arthurs said he was delighted to have the contract renewed and hoped it would be renewed again next year. “As long as the vessels are coming here, the work will have to be done,’’ he said. There are only two New Zealand companies which hold contracts for maintenance on visiting Russian vessels. The Nelson firm, Anchor Doorman, Ltd, also holds a contract. Nelson, like Lyttelton, is an important base for the Russian fishing fleet.
