Topsoil swept from U.S. plains

NZPA staff correspondent Washington

Farmers in the 10 Plains states from Montana and North Dakota to Texas may have to delay planting and reduce their livestock because wind erosion peeled topsoil off 1,400,000 ha this winter.

That is twice last year’s loss, and was caused by a lack of rain and alternate freezing and thawing. A Congressional committee will soon consider a bill that would create a ?US3OO million ($450 million) “soil bank” to take four million hectares of erodible land out of production to allow natural growth to stabilise the soil.
