Pupils try to protect bicycles

PA Whakatane A group of Whakatane third-formers have started a crime-prevention programme to protect bicycles. The group hopes to buy a computer and store serial numbers from bicycles in it, with the names and details of their owners.

It will give the police quick access to the owners of stolen or recovered bicycles. Known as computek, the system was the brainchild of a group of students who were at Whakatane Intermediate last year. When they moved on to high school this year a meeting was held and a committee formed.

“Eyes of the community” is the slogan for the project which the police have described as innovative and useful.

The group’s publicity officer, Sharelie Good, aged 13, said the high number of bicycles stolen in Whakatane was a worry. Easy tracking was needed if the rate was to be slowed.
