Bid fails by ‘whisker’

The Canterbury cyclist, Murray Steele, came within a whisker of Michael Mcßedmond’s national sprint record of 11.17 s in a special time trial at Denton Park, Christchurch, last evening. Steele has been told that if he betters the mark he will be nominated for the sprint event at the Los Angeles Olympics. During the second of his

three rides last evening, Steele looked quite comfortable. Jamie Nisbet kept the pace honest in front, and William Rastrick, also a sprinter, took control at the beginning of the final 400 m, giving Steele the best possible chance to cover the final 200 m in the required time.

Unfortunately for him, the 11.19 s was a fiftieth of a second too slow.

He recorded 11.23 s for the other two rides. Denton Park was at its calmest for the last attempt, but the track was cold and Steele is hopeful that the sun will shine and the wind drop again for a further time trial today. Considering the cold, and that the track season is officially over, it was remarkable that Steele recorded personal best times.
