Bus-job proviso extended
PA Auckland Teachers have to provide a character reference and be cleared by the police before driving a school bus this year. These provisions already applied to other employees seeking a licence to drive a bus, in both the Government and private-sector groups, but teachers were previously exempt.
The president of the New Zealand Educational Institute, Mr Lex Familton, said that he did not think the move would create any difficulties, as teaachers were already closely vetted. The N.Z.E.1., the primary teacher’s organisation, has been assured by the Ministry of Transport that teachers already possessing licences will not have their positions changed. New applicants will not be subject to a delay of more than two days in meeting the requirements;
