22,500 claims on faulty homes
PA Wellington About 22,500 new home owners have sought insurance against building or material faults since the Building Performance Guarantee Corporation came into being six years ago. The corporation’s chairman, Mr lan McAllister, said that that represented cover of $741 million. He said the demand for indemnities issued by the corporation was keeping pace wn the "amost 24 per
cent” increase in the issue of building permits this year. The corporation, in the last year,-had issued over 3000 indemnities — Govern-ment-guaranteed cover for six years against default by builders, failure of materials, or serious construction defects. The corporation has paid out about $390,000 in claims, mostly against construction failure caused by poor workmanship. **
