Two more convicted
NZPA-AP Fall River A jury has convicted two men of aggravated rape and acquitted two others of all charges in the case of a woman who was gang-raped on a bar room pool table while spectators cheered. Two other defendants were convicted last Saturday of aggravated rape in a separate trial before a separate jury. The crime carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. The Superior Court jury deliberated just over seven hours before returning the verdicts, ending the highly publicised double trials, which were carried on live television. The case shocked the nation and became a rallying point for women’s rights groups when a mother, aged 22, reported on March 6, 1983, that she had been attacked in a tavern in New Bedford.
The trial was moved to Fall River,- Massachusetts, due to the heavy publicity.
