Transcendental meditation

Sir,—May I remind D. Dawson (March 10) that if the sheep of John X,14 have chosen to be in the T.M. sheepfold they will not listen for the voice of Christ. They will only hear and recognise the voice of their leader, the yogi, whom they worship. When God created man He gave him a mind to choose with, otherwise he would be an automaton. If he chooses T.M, that is his right, but in so doing he rejects Christ, for man can only serve one God. What is it to be — Christianity or transcendental meditation? You cannot have it both ways. — Yours, etc., ANTHONY LE CREN. March 10, 1984. Sir, — All right-thinking persons will by now be alert to the danger of unconscious conversion to Hinduism should they indulge in yoga. An even more insidious threat faces our Western Christian civilisation. I have been horrified to find that many people, even right-thinking ones, do not realise the baneful effects of another exotic influence

which has pervaded New Zealand. Do you realise that the spread of foreign cooking is a diabolical plot? I distinctly remember hearing that an Indian swami once said that food is a gift of the gods, and enjoyment thereof an act of thanksgiving. What could be more revealing? Yoga is plainly only one tentacle in this hideous conspiracy. Citizens who eat curry will one day awaken to find themselves Hindus. Those who consume Chinese takeaways may well become prey to Confusionist beliefs, or even Maoism. — Yours, etc., GORDON B. TULLOCH. March 17, 1984. Sir, — As a Christian I know from experience that a person can find peace of mind and the ability to cope with life’s everyday problems with the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This is a free gift from God and John xiv, 27 explains that it cannot be obtained from following any worldly teachings from exponents of transcendental meditation. Advocates of T.M. may find some satisfaction in opening their minds to unknown and dangerous spiritual forces, but no lasting peace will result. Christianity offers all the answers to peace, joy, power and supernatural experiences without dangerous results. — Yours, etc., BRUCE HILLS. March 16, 1984.
