Dismissal appeal finding studied

PA Wellington University teachers are seeking legal advice on the ramifications of the decision by the Governor-General, Sir David Beattie, that the sacked Waikato University lecturer, Mr R. J. Rigg, should not be reinstated.

Sir David, in his capacity as University Visitor, has endorsed Mr Rigg’s dismissal from the university in May, 1980. Mr Rigg was sacked from his post as a senior lecturer in German after he helped write an article linking laboratory radiation leaks with student deaths.

The Association of University Teachers said yes-

terday that a preliminary reading of the report oh which Sir David based his decision revealed some matters of concern about university disciplinary procedures. These would need careful consideration. The association was taking legal advice and would hold a national executive meeting to discuss the ramifications of the decision and future steps which could be taken to deal most fairly with disciplinary matters. The president, Ms Heather Simpson, said the association was concerned about the length of time it had taken to decide Mr Rigg’s appeal.
