Jobs only for non-smokers

NZPA-AP Fairfax

Newly hired fire-fighters, policemen, and deputies in Fairfax County must pledge to refrain from smoking cigarettes as long as they hold the jobs. The recently introduced rule requires all new public safety employees to sign a pledge stating they are nonsmokers and will not smoke while they hold those jobs. It does not apply to workers already hired. The county’s decision was endorsed bj’ the Fairfax fire chief, police chief, and sheriff, but was blasted by a Tobacco Institute spokesman, William Toohey. “Where does it all end?” he said. “Are we going to have a ban on ice-cream and butter ... because some believe that those are linked with health problems?”
