Pierce 146 n.o. in Hawke Cup
fa ivetson A superb unbeaten century by Nelson’s Roger Pierce helned his side out of early trouble and moved it to a respectable 323 for nine wickets in the Cyclone Hawke Cup cricket defence against Southland at Trafalgar Park yesterday. The first day was lost on Saturday through dampness on and around the wicket but the Nelson captain, Richard Hayward, decided to bat when he won the toss.
Southland took the early advantage when it had three of the top order batsmen out for only 36.
An excellent 137-run fourth-wicket partnership between Pierce and Wayne Hodgson turned the game for Nelson.
Hodgson scored 68, including three 6s and seven 4s when he was run out. Pierce came to the crease only 14min after the start and was still there seven hours later on 146 when bad light stopped play at 6.23 p.m. Play ends today. Scores: Nelson first innings 323 for nine (R. Pierce 146 not out, W. Hodgson 68, J. Edwards 49; B. McKechnie 4/62, J. Lindsay 2/ 73).
