Air link blocked

PA Auckland Air New Zealand cabin crew have voted to block the airline’s planned direct service between Auckland and Los Angeles.

The service was due to begin on April 1, and was to be part of the airline’s Auckland-London link. In two resolutions, 120 cabin crew have voted:

® To reject the airline’s proposals for conditions and crewing numbers on the new service as “totally inadequate.” • To give the executive of the Airline Stewards and Hostesses’ Union power to call a series of stop-work meetings at its discretion every time the airline broke an award or revised a rostering system agreement. Cabin crew have been seeking 19 members on the non-stop flights, some of which will last longer than 13 hours.

It has also sought horizontal rest seats and more time off before and after the flights.

The airline offered 17 crew positions and other proposals for crew rest and time off, but talks broke down five days ago.

The row worsened when the airline changed the forward roster from 28 to 14 days because of uncertainty beyond April 1. Union officials said that support for both resolutions was unanimous.
