U.S. frigate

A United States Navy frigate expected at Lyttelton on Saturday would not take part in military exercises near Great Barrier Island, said the director of public relations for the Ministry of Defence, Wing Commander G. T. Clarke, yesterday. Christchurch peace groups had said that the ship, the U.S.S. Whipple, was in New Zealand for the exercise. However, the Whipple, the U.S.S. Schofield, and U.S.S. Queenfish will participate in a joint maritime exercise

off North Cape and off the Bay of Islands, beginning on March 16. H.M.N.Z.S. Waikato and American, New Zealand, and Australian aircraft would also take part, Wing Commander Clarke said.’ The exercise was unrelated to the New Zealand Army exercise at Great Barrier Island, he said. Peace groups plan to march from Victoria Square on Friday evening to protest against the Whipple, which they believe could be armed with nuclear weapons.
