Record drug haul in Thailand

NZPA-AP Bangkok The authorities seized a record 265.2 kilograms of topquality heroin recently in a Gulf of Siam province where it was to be taken to overseas markets.

The police chief, Colonel Bhirom Chua-vong, said that the authorities, acting on an intelligence report from Bangkok, found the drugs in 15 fertiliser sacks on shore in Muang (central) district in Rayong Province, 200 kilometres southeast of the Thai capital. Colonel Bhirom said no-one was ar-

rested because the drug traffickers, apparently tipped off about the raid, had fled. An official of the office of the Narcotics Control Board in Bangkok estimated the local street sale value of the heroin at SNZI.7 million, but said its value would be much greater in overseas markets. It was not known where the drugs were bound for. The official said the previous record heroin haul was 115 kilograms seized by the authorities in July, 1977.
