Obituary Mr. P.H. Wood
A prominent Christchurch lawyer and businessman. Mr Peter Hallows Wood, died on Saturday. He was 79. Mr "Hal" Wood was a member of a family who had milled flour in Christchurch for more than a century, serving as director of the former family company of Wood Bros. Ltd. Other directorships included the Canterbury (N.Z.) Seed Company, Ltd, and James Shand and Company, Ltd. Mr Wood retired from the law firm of Murchison and Wood in 1978. He was educated at Christ’s College and completed his legal training in London. After serving in Greece
and North Africa during World War 11, he became actively involved in the Christchurch Returned Services' Association and the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council. For more than 30 years he was a member of, and for part of that time, chairman, of the homes committee of the Rannerdale War Veterans' Home in Christchurch. Mr Wood was a life member of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and a member of the Christchurch Club for 18 years, but golf was his main leisure pursuit. He was the oldest active member of the Christchurch Golf Club until shortly before his death. He is survived bv a son.
