Canterbury squeaks to third golf win

PA Invercargill Canterbury won the Southland amateur golf invitational at Otatara yesterday for the third successive year, but it was a close call as they got home by just one stroke from Auckland. The Canterbury golf machine worked smoothly on Saturday and looked set for a comfortable win when it led by 11 strokes from Auckland, with one stroke back to Bay of Plenty, after the first two rounds. It still led by six shots in spite of a hiccup in the third round yesterday morning, but that lead vanished quickly when the pressure went on in the final round. Within five holes, Auckland had moved one stroke ahead of Canterbury, with three stokes back to Bay of Plenty, and the other 12 teams out of contention. It was nail-biting stuff. With four holes to play, Canterbury clung to a twostroke lead over Auckland, with three back to Bay of Plenty. It was not until the last cards were checked that the Canterbury win was confirmed. The Canterbury team of Brent Paterson, Jim Lapsley, Mark Street, John Sanders and John Williamson was the same combination that won the invitational last year. John Williamson (Canter-

bury) won the Air New Zealand Cup for leading individual, as he did two years ago, by holing an 8m birdie putt on the first extra hole to beat Mid-South Canterbury’s Ross Murray after a tie. “It was the only putt I made all day, but it was a good one to get,” said Williamson. He had the best round of the tournament, a four-under 68.
