Soccer Plenty of action at Rangers Park

The four Hertz League teams in action at Rangers Park produced a hatful of goals, plenty of action, one sending-off and an unforeseen problem for the organising committee in the King Leosponsored soccer tournament yesterday. The problem arose from the outcome of the second match between Rangers and Woolston W.M.C. Woolston needed a three-goal winning margin to pip Nomads United for a semifinal spot. At half-time, Woolston led, 3-0, then conceded two goals and scored a fourth a minute from the end, leaving it level on goal difference with Nomads. A play-off between the teams will probably be held at Rangers Park tonight. Mike Poole, Rab Brown, with a header from a corner,

and Keith Francis, completing one of Woolston’s best moves of the match, scored the firsthalf goals. Goeff Blackburn missed a penalty for Rangers before the interval, but partly made amends half an hour into the second half when Woolston’s golakeeper, Steven Reeves, dropped the ball. Blackburn was on hand to reduce the margin. By this stage Rangers were down to 10 men, John Boatwood having been sent off after receiving his second caution of the half. Three minutes from the end, Grant Hughes further closed the gap with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. However, Poole got his head to a ball at close range to make Woolston comfortable winners.

In the early match, Cashmere-Wanderers and Shamrock shared the points and the goals in a 3-3 draw. Cashmere led through Paul Harrison, but Tony Steer equalised before half-time. Steer then added a penalty soon after the break and Mike Howard put Shamrock 3-1 ahead before Duncan Baxter and Harrison, four minutes from the end, brought Cashmere level. Final section points.—Group A: Cashmere and Christchurch United 4, Western and Shamrock 2. Group B: New Brighton 4, Woolston and Nomads 3, Rangers 2. In Wednesday evening’s semi-finals, United will play either Woolston or Nomads, and Cashmere will meet New Brighton.
