Burnside women have softball win

Noel Leemine Burnside beat Western Suburbs, 8-0, in the only premier women’s softball match on Saturday. The Western Suburbs fielders were constantly under pressure as Bumside successfully advanced runners with accurate bunting. Karina Dreaver had a particularly fine game for Bumside, both when batting and on first base. Chris John struck out nine of the 24 Western Suburbs batters that she faced. The only real scoring chance

created by Western Suburbs evaporated when, after Carol Gordon had hit a three-bagger, Carolyn Renney sought a bunt past Dreaver. But Dreaver held the catch and had Gordon tagged out at third base. Runs for Burnside were scored by Jane Earnshaw (two), Chris Patterson (two), Marilyn Lee, Robyn Storer, John and Dreaver. In A grade matches, Papanui beat United, 5-3, and Woolston had the better of Monawai B, 12-8.
