Swimming Nine nomtinations for Olympic Games

PA Hamilton Six swimmers and three divers nominated to represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles were named at the end of the national swimming and diving championships at Hamilton on Saturday. The swimming team of Anthony Mosse, Paul Kingsman, Brett Austin, Gary Hurring and Michael Davidson (all Auckland), and Gail Jonson (Waikato) was largely predictable, but the selectors also provisonally nominated Carmel Clark (Hawkes’ Bay-Poverty Bay) and Anna Doig (Wellington) who are close to qualifying. The diving team comprises Ann Fargher (Waikato), Mark Graham (Auckland), and Gary Lamb (Otago). Lamb and Jonson were the only competitors to qualify for the Olympics at the championships, the other nominees having qualified during the last year. Gail Jonson (Waikato) broke her own record when she qualified for Olympic nomination in the women’s 400 m individual medley, while the Bay of Plenty youth, Craig Thomas, bettered two New Zealand junior records, in the 100 m and 200 m breaststroke. Brett Austin established a new national record on his way to winning gold in the men’s 100 m breaststroke. Carmel Clark raced the women’s 100 m backstroke in the fastest time by a New Zealander. Members of the Australian Olympic squad dominated the championships.

The only finals the Australians did not win were the men’s 100 m backstroke, the men’s 200 m butterfly, and the women’s 1500 m freestyle. Paul Kingsman nudged the Australian champion, David Orbell, into second place in an exciting men’s 100 m backstroke, while Anthony Mosse easily won the men’s 200 m butterfly. The women’s 1500 m freestyle was won by Tanya Green (Otago). The Australians did not contest the event. The highlight of the championships was the breaking of the Commonwealth record for the men’s 4 x 100 m freestyle relay by Australia, beating the record it held by 0.8 seconds. The national diving championships, held simultaneously with the swimming, were dominated by Waikato divers. The Waikato team ended the championships with 25 medals — 12 gold, nine silver, and four bronze. Gary Lamb was responsible for the only upsets when he beat the Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Mark Graham, in the men’s open Im and 3m springboard events.
