Maori Council backs take-over

PA Wellington The New Zealand Maori Council supports the takeover of the Rotorua Maori Arts and Crafts Centre by Maori International. After more than four hours discussion at its quarterly meeting in Wellington last evening the council voted to support unconditionally the April 1 takeover by the company. Two delegates opposed the motion. They were the Rotorua representative Mr Manu Paul, from the Waiariki District Council and the New Zealand council’s convener of cultural develop; ment, Professor Whatarangi Winiata. Two other District Councils, Wellington and Waikato abstained. The Maori Council’s head, Sir Graham Latimer, said the vote was a victory not for the company, but for all of Maoridom. Sir Graham is also a director of Maori International and chairman of the institute board. He said there was no conflict of interest in his three roles because he wanted to use all three for the betterment

of Maori people and not for personal gain. He would take the council’s decision back to the Government. He said all that was needed now for the take-over to go ahead was the approval of the Te Arawa Trust.
