Bowls victory for Linwood

Linwood’s dominance of women’s bowls in Christchurch was taken another step yesterday when Lex Kimber’s team of Bev Morel, Barbara Kamo and Elsie Williams won the biennial open fours tournament.

It was something of an anniversary win for Mrs Kimber, who was in the early stages of her career when as the second in another Linwood team she won the event 10 years ago. Since then Mrs Kimber has earned her centre gold star and been a New Zealand representative. She had few worries in yesterday’s final, where her opponent was Alice Whiting (Woolston W.M.C.) Some aggressive play earned Mrs Kimber a six on the second end and she was in charge from then on. It was 12-0 after four ends, 19-3 after ten and Mrs Whiting conceded with the score at 30-8 and four ends unplayed.

This was the second successive week that Mrs Whiting and her team of Vai Chick, Elsie Tennant and

Jean Johnston had lost a major fours final; last week they were the runners-up in the champion-of-champions fours. All four members of the Linwood team played well though the three rounds yesterday but the one who really excelled was Mrs Williams. In the final especially, there was barely a head on which she did not draw a handy shot. In the semi-finals, Mrs Kimber and Mrs Whiting both had big wins, and here Mrs Whiting knew what it was like to break clear early. She was 16-0 up on Kath Williamson (Mt Pleasant) after only four ends. Results. — Quarter finals. — D. Smith (Kia Toa) 21, A. Triggs (Riccarton Women’s) 12; L. Kimber (Linwood) 26, A.
