Syd Tonks to retire

PA Auckland Handicapper for Auckland and Waikato districts, Syd Tonks, yesterday announced he will retire this month. Mr Tonks has been connected with racing throughout his working life. He was a journalist with the New Zealand Herald, later a commentator, and in 1961 was appointed handicapper for Auckland Racing district.

He also became handicapper for all clubs in Waikato district except the Waikato Racing Club, for which he worked some years later. From 1948 to the late 1970 s he broadcast meetings in Auckland and the Waitako.

Mr Tonks said yesterday that he had become concerned about his health.

Secretary of the Auckland Racing Club, Mr . Bill Mackie, said the deputy handicapper, Dean Nowell, had been appointed to fill Mr Tonks’ position.
