Arthur Hughes retiring

PA Auckland Mr Arthur Hughes yesterday announced his retirement as the president of the Auckland Racing Club. He has also told the New Zealand Racing Conference of his intention not to seek reelection as conference president next season.

Mr Hughes said his work in connection with the recent Asian Racing Conference did not finish when delegates returned home. Demands on his time over the next six months would not allow him to continue as president of the Auckland club.

Mr Hughes, a member of the club for 36 years, was elected a steward 24 years ago and has served 20 years on the committee. He was elected vice-president in 1973 and president in 1975. At the end of the season Mr Hughes will have completed 10 years as president of the Racing Conference. The new ARC president will be Dr Calvin Ring, who was elected steward 16 years ago and has been on the committee for 13 years. He is vice-president and chairman of the Auckland district committee.
