Stewart rally favourite
The New Zealand rally champion, Malcolm Stewart, of Dannevirke, has been seeded first for the Westland Car club’s annual Greymouth Motors Firestone Tasman rally today. Consisting of eight special stages totalling 160 km, the rally is the first of the fiveround 1984 Mainland rally championships. Stewart,
however, because of domiciliary rules, is not eligible for points. The former Sports Sedan and OSCA circuit racing champion. Inky Tulloch, from Mataura, is seeded second, with the defending champion, the Waikuku farmer, Brian Stokes, at three. Stokes, who was also the National 1600 cu cm cham-
pion last season has fitted to his Ford Esort an 1840 cu cm BDA motor and as well as seeking to defend his Mainland title, he will be looking for higher honours in the national series. Both Stewart and Tulloch will be driving powerful Ford Escort RSlBOOs. This type of car is being driven bv seven of the top 10 drivers. Two Christchurch drivers, Ross Bailey and Bruce Reid, are in the leading group. Bailey, who will start at No. 4, will drive a two litre Nissan Stanza and Reid at No. 8, a Mazda RX3. The defending 1300 cu cm champion, Roger Townshend, in a Nissan 1300, from Christchurch, leads his class being seeded at 11 with his strongest opposition being Richard Hunt (Nelson, Toyota Starlet) and John Campbell (Timaru, Nissan 1200 SSS) at No. 12 and No. 13 respectively.
