Police still seek attempted rapist

The Christchurch police are continuing their hunt for a youth who attempted to rape a woman, aged 25, at her flat in Cumberland Street, Richmond, on Tuesday morning. They still seek a 20cm knife which the youth, aged about 16, used to threaten the woman. The youth might have discarded the knife and a stocking, which the woman thought he wore during the attack, in the Cumberland Street area. Detectives yesterday made house-to-house inquiries in the area to gain

information about the youth, described as Polynesian. During the attack the woman’s arms were tied behind her back with a scarf, she was gagged with a leather belt, and had a pillow case pulled over her head. The youth then attempted to rape her on the floor. The incident happened between 10 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. The attacker is described as being fine-featured and about 170 cm (sft 7in) tall. He wore blue overalls and possibly a yellow T-shirt or jersey.
