Periodic detention

A misunderstanding over money which culminated in an assault and threats to kill had its sequel in the District Court yesterday. Richard Mansfield Austin, aged 23, a beneficiary, and David Glen Akroyd, aged 19, an apprentice chef, appeared for sentence on charges of assault. Austin also faced an additional charge of threatening to kill and the defendants had admitted the charges at an earlier hearing. Counsel, Mr R. A. Peters, told the Court that the defendants and the com-

plainant had been drinking when the incident occurred on September 29 last year. The assault took place after a long, heated argument over the return of an ornamental jar and a misunderstanding about some money the defendants believed the complainant owed them. Sentencing them both to six months periodic detention, Judge Fraser said he believed that they were equally blameworthy and it was just their age and lack of previous convictions of this type that kept them out of prison.
