Children were ill, mothers sea-sick, and the ship’s doctor was a drunkard. The crew always looked so wet and tired out. (They were really brave men, never given any real credit and taken for granted.) We were supposed to be heading for New York, about the rough position of the Titanic. A group of drunken N.Z. soldiers threw the grand piano over board. The captain wasn’t impressed. A soldier told me it needed tuning anyway. No one was allowed off at New York, only 1 soldier, who happend to be ring-leader of the piano throwers, got off at New York. I was pleased to see Wellington.
