Cricket final?
If Canterbury can beat Wellington in the Shell Trophy cricket match which will begin at Lancaster Park today, and Auckland wins against Central Dis : tricts at Nelson, the Canter-bury-Auckland match which will end the first-class season will have particular significance. This game was set down for March 6,7, and 8. However the match, which might well be the final, has been put back to March 9, 10, and 11, this is to fall in with the plans of the Auckland Cricket Association, which this season is celebrating its centennial. Canterbury first played Auckland at Hagley Park in 1873 but the first match between the provinces after the formation of the Auckland association began on December 31, 1883. Auckland won by four wickets, Canterbury’s top scorer being Frank Wilding, the father of the tennis player Anthony Wilding, with 49. The Auckland association could not have a centennial match on December 31, but it is to mark the occasion with this season’s game. There is to be a dinner during the week-end, and some weeks ago, more than 200 former Auckland players had said they would be present.
