Assistant for Bishop
A new assistant to the Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, the Most Rev. P. B. Ashby, will be chosen in the next few weeks. The new coadjutor bishop will be appointed by Pope John Paul II and his name will be announced from the Vatican. He will have the full right of succession on the retirement of Bishop Ashby. Bishop Ashby asked Rome for an assistant several months ago because of his heavy workload in the diocese and on the Angli-can-Roman Catholic International Commission said the diocesan communications director, the Rev. Ray Schmack.
The recent health problem, from which Bishop Ashby had recovered, was another consideration, said Father Schmack.
Names suggested by Bishop Ashby were forwarded to the Pope along with confidential references from selected priests, religious and laity within the diocese, said Father Schmack. The references were sought by the Papal Pro-Nuncio in New Zealand, Archbishop Antonio Magnoni. The coadjutor bishop will share the responsibilities of the diocese with Bishop Ashby. These include the four-yearly visits to each of the 52 parishes in the diocese, Catholic education, and the conferring of confirmation. Bishop Ashby plans to attend the next meeting of the joint commission in Durham, England, in August and a meeting of the Secretariat for Christian Unity in Rome in November,
